Above: Located on the east side of the Jardin des Tuileries is the home of the Mona Lisa, the mighty Louvre.
The main building was first opened to the public in 1793, during the French Revolution, and within a decade
Napoleon had made it the largest art collection on earth with the takings from his empire. Today, I.M. Pei's
stunning glass pyramid is the main entrance to the museum.
Above: The Conciergerie is Paris's oldest prison. This was where Marie-Antoinette and, in their turn, the
leading figures of the French Revolution were incarcerated before execution.
Above: The Hotel des Invalides was built as a home for invalided soldiers on the
orders of King Louis XIV and topped by a distinctive gilded dome which is a real
Paris landmark. It now houses a military museum and Napoleon's tomb.
Above: Though it needs no introduction, the Eiffel Tower is an amazing
structure, and at 300 meters the tallest building in the world when it was
completed by Gustave Eiffel in 1889. Initial public reactions to the Eiffel Tower
were violent, but today it is treasured as a national symbol of France.
