Spain

   Granada
Above: In Granada stands Spain's most visited monument, the Alhambra.
This wonder of the world is a spectacular and serene climax of Moorish art
in Spain. One of the greatest accomplishments of Islamic art and
architecture, the Alhambra is simply breathtaking. Much has been written
about its fortress, palace, patios and gardens, but nothing can really prepare
you for what you will see.
Above: There are three distinct groups of buildings on the Alhambra hill: the Royal Palace, the palace
gardens of the Generalife, and the Alcazaba, from whose reddish walls the hilltop took its name: al-Hamra
in Arabic means "the red."
Above: The Palace, built for Granada's Muslim rulers in their 13th- to 15th-century
heyday, is the centerpiece of the Alhambra. Water is an integral part of Islamic
architecture, and many fountains and pools can be found throughout the Palace.
Above: My friend Rob and I celebrated his birthday with a memorable dinner in Granada. We enjoyed the
food and wine just as much as this stunning view from the restaurant!
Above: The beauty and intricacy of the Palace's stucco and woodwork are stunning.
