Colchester
Above: Colchester Castle is the largest keep ever built by the Normans. It was constructed between 1076
and 1125 over the ruined base of the great Temple of Claudius, which had been built by the Romans 1,000
years earlier.

The Romans quickly rebuilt the town after its destruction by Boudica in AD
60. The new town was enclosed by a substantial defensive wall. Some
two-thirds of these defences still stand, making Colchester's town walls the
oldest in Britain.
Above: The Saxons gave Colchester its modern name, meaning 'Fortress on the Colne.' Only one of their
buildings, Holy Trinity Church, still stands.
